Donation to FOCAL

Rolling for Reading, community service project of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Skateboard Moms Inc., donated $990 to FOCAL (aka Friends of Children and Literature) last week at the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles.

The donation was generated via a raffle at the 2010 Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama on May 9, 2010. Ninety percent of the raffle proceeds went to FOCAL, which will use the funds to help bring back its regular storytimes for the children and families of downtown L.A.

Thanks to all who supported our efforts!

Rolling for Reading!

Rolling for Reading is the community service project of the nonprofit Skateboard Moms Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization that empowers women and girls through skateboarding and seeks to boost a love of reading in all children.

Rolling for Reading (R4R) is an all-volunteer grassroots program that seeks to better the world...one good book at a time!

Rolling for Reading volunteers load up backpacks with new and gently-used books and roll (unannounced) into parks, playgrounds and community centers in non-affluent areas to hand out books to kids in need.

Rolling for Reading also raises money for children's literacy programs through its annual Rockin' Raffle at the Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama, the Mothers Day skateboard festival hosted by Skateboard Moms. The 2010 event will be Sunday May 9 at skateparks around the Greater LA region. Proceeds will benefit FOCAL, aka Friends of Children and Literature, an all-volunteer literacy program based at downtown LA's Central Library.

Just some of the prizes in our Rockin' Raffle at the 2007 Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama. Raffle proceeds went to an afterschool tutoring center for at-risk kids in La Habra, Calif.

Everywhere we go, we try to spread the love of reading!

Sometimes, the kids ask us for impromptu lessons. How can we resist?
